Calvin Hedrick, Founder, The 5th Direction:

Calvin Hedrick is Mountain Maidu from Plumas County in Northeastern California.

He is the Director of The 5th Direction, a program working with Native youth and communities in Northern California. Calvin has over 19 years of experience working with the American Indian community in California and over 15 years working in suicide prevention.

Calvin earned his Bachelor Of Arts Degree in Native American Studies from Humboldt State University, and attended Graduate school at UCLA.

He is a graduate of the Indian Teacher and Education Personnel Program (ITEPP) at HSU and certified in the White Bison, Native Wellness Institute and several other prevention curricula. He has served as a Public Health Institute consultant to the NEOP American Indian/Alaska Native Campaign. Previously, he has worked for the California Rural Indian Health Board, the Native American Health Center Healing Circle, the Inter-Tribal Council of California, and United American Indian Involvement. He currently teaches American Indian Literature at CSU Chico and is a published poet and writer and leads book clubs and writing workshops in tribal communities. He is a Maidu dancer and is knowledgeable in American Indian traditional games, and has coordinated the California Indian Handgame Tournament and Capitol City Classic All Indian Youth Basketball tournament for the past several years.

Calvin lives with his wife and three sons (ages 18, 9, and 7) and two nieces (ages 3 and 5) in Carmichael, CA.
